Applications for Australia Awards Scholarships for study commencing in 2026 will open on 1 February 2025. So now is the time to start preparing for your application, including ensuring that you satisfy the necessary English language requirements.

Australia Awards Scholarships will be offered for master’s degree by coursework/research in any of the priority fields of study on offer that support Bhutan to achieve its development goals and objectives.

Applicants are assessed on their professional and personal qualities, leadership potential, academic competence and their ability to contribute to Bhutan’s inclusive and sustainable development.

Applications from women, people with disability and other marginalised groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Potential applicants for an Australia Awards Scholarship in Bhutan for study commencing in 2026 are encouraged to check their eligibility to assess whether they may satisfy the eligibility criteria for an Australia Awards Scholarship before they commence an application.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for an Australia Awards Scholarship for a master’s degree by coursework/research program, you must meet certain standards in English language proficiency, with the results valid as at 1 January 2026 (If an institution requires a different test validity timeframe, applicants must meet the institution’s requirements). At minimum, you must have:

  • an IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.5 with no band less than 6.0; or
  • a TOEFL internet-based test (iBT) score of at least 84, with a minimum of 21 in writing, and 19 in all other sub-tests; or
  • a PTE Academic overall score of 58 with no communicative skill score less than 50.
Information sessions

Australia Awards – Bhutan is conducting online information sessions in February and March 2025 for prospective Australia Awards Scholarship applicants. Eligible applicants are highly encouraged to participate in one of these sessions. Interested applicants can register via the following link.

Universities and Courses in Australia The Australian Government’s Study Australia website has everything you need to know about studying, living and working in Australia as an international student, including a course search tool to help you find and compare courses before making your choice.
List of Australia’s universities Australia is home to 42 universities. The Study Australia website lists them all, including links to each university’s own website, and provides a map that shows campus locations across all Australian states and territories.
Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) The Australian Government’s Department of Education maintains a register of all Australian education providers that offer courses to people studying in Australia on student visas, and the courses that each provider offers.
Scholarship applicants must meet the English language proficiency requirements specified by Australia Awards for their country. DFAT will accept results from any of the English language tests outlined at these links.
